Wedding Dresses: Old and New
When planning their wedding, almost every brides’ most favorite and most nerve-wracking part is wedding dress shopping. With all eyes on them on their wedding day, the bride wants to look their absolute best, and sometimes, have a lot of sentiment to go with it. Most of the time, the first place the bride will look for a dress is to their family.
Most mothers and grandmothers would love to see their children wear the same dress they wore on their big day. Many families have even had a wedding dress in their family for generations, keeping pristine and preserved until it’s needed again. Many brides hope to carry on this tradition, while others want something to call their own. Some will even mix the two! It is all about preference.
Old or vintage dresses carry many stories and are timeless, making them perfect for smaller and more intimate ceremonies shared with those closest to the couple. They tend to be more simple and typically lack elements such as rhinestones and beading.
New and more modern dresses are very eye-catching and come in many shapes, sizes, and styles. With more and more brides wanting to stand out and be more memorable, dress designers are finding more ways to make each dress one of a kind. Compared to their predecessors, new dresses come in an array of colors other than white. It has become common to see brides wearing dresses in color, such as red, shades of pink, and even as dark as black.
So what if there is a hiccup with the old dress? What if it is too small, it has yellowed over time, or there is a stain or a rip? It can be a downer when these types of things are found out, but there are ways to compromise and still have the dress incorporated. Some brides will have pieces of the old dress added to a new one, added a layer to their new dress. Others will take pieces and incorporate them into their overall look, wearing the veil or using pieces of lace to wrap around their bouquet. Some brides will go the extra mile and just have a new dress made to be a replica of the old one, adding small touches here and there to make it their own.
A bride’s wedding dress is a very special piece that she will want to keep to remember her special day for years to come, and she will potentially hope to pass it down to the next generation, so she will do whatever she has to ensure that her dress will be timeless.
