When Lovers Quarrel
When lovers quarrel, the very Heavens tremble
Lest one more pair should part
And decrease that Heaven and love's fragile might.
And, if we, who so ignorantly strike
At the very heart of what we most desire,
Could but see those bright hosts, who
With baited breaths do ring us round,
All our levity of pride, swift as a bolt,
We''d let slip to ground in silent shame
And our entire souls entwine
In penance and great fear
At such portending doom
As to be both unloving and unloved
When that trump resounds
That summons us—
Either to great grief, or
To love's sweet reward,
Which is itself.
